WHEELCHAIR ACCESSIBLE MOUNTAIN PROGRAMS

TO OPEN AUGUST 7, 2004

Stephen Wampler is realizing his childhood dream. He is re-opening a camp that changed his life decades ago, in hopes that it will have the same profound affect on others in his situation.  He has cerebral palsy and is wheelchair bound.  It was thru this camp back in 1977, at the time owned by then Senator John Negedly, that he realized his potential.  Although his disability is considered to be quite severe, Stephen realized he was capable of camping, boating, fishing and many other seemingly small activities that led him to be the successful husband, father and businessman that he is today.

The Camp, which is situated on Hawley Lake in the High Sierras, has a very interesting history.  Senator Negedly bequeathed the property to the Boy Scouts of America until 2002.  At the end of that time it was sold to Contra Costa Youth Council, which is under the leadership of the Senator’s son, Jim Negedly.  It is thru Jim’s generosity and willingness to lease the land to the non-profit organization Camp WAMP, Inc. that this camp will re-open August 7, 2004.

The camp director is Jenny Yarrow, a woman with 18 years of experience working with children and young adults with mental and physical disabilities.  She and her staff have the capacity to host 15 campers per week this summer, with one counselor allocated per camper and 10 support staff.  The philosophy of the camp is to give rich, varied and closely supervised activity programs with a minimally structured schedule.  The unique and rugged wilderness experience, normally only available to able bodied persons, provides the freedom and guidance to explore new possibilities and expand their often very limited expectations as many seemingly trivial challenges have to be conquered.

Camp W.A.M.P, Inc.  is not only about the camp at Hawley Lake.  It’s vision is to be the leading operator and sponsor of year round enrichment camping programs throughout the country for 5000 children and young adults with physical disabilities by the beginning of 2009.

For more information on Camp WAMP please feel free to contact Stephen Wampler directly at (619) 957-4285.
